The breed "Miniature" originated in the late 1800's in Germany as a smaller version of the Standard Schnauzer. The Breed Standard calls for the height at shoulder blades to be at least 12" and no more than 14". It does not specify any particular weight for the breed. That will depend on size and bone structure but a dog measuring 12" to 14" can be 11 to 20 lbs. "Toy" Schnauzers are under 10" tall. This is a disqualification from being shown due to their small size. The "Toy" Schnauzer is not a separate breed, it is simply an undersized Miniature Schnauzer. The coat can be wiry, wavy, soft or curly. The Miniature Schnauzer
has a stocky build, fairly thick whiskers and leg furnishings and their
ears can be either natural or cropped. The look of a Schnauzer is in the
grooming and ear cropping. Left natural, they do not look like a schnauzer.
Schnauzers have overly large ears for their size. Schnauzer colors are:
Salt & Pepper; Black; Black with some white markings, Black &
Silver, Silver, Chocolate, White, and Parti-color. The AKC will only allow
Salt and Pepper, Black and Silver and solid Black color to be shown; although
all colors can |
